Public relations officer, student’s union government federal polytechnic Oko, popularly known as Comr. N.I Victor has spoke on the dangers he’s being exposed to for performing his constitutional duties as the public relations officer and the spokesperson of the union.
‘I wish to state categorically that I have never used my office as SUG PRO in any form to mobilize or persuade any student or group of students to carry out any protest in the polytechnic’, he emphasized. According to him, “I am being compelled not to discharge my constitutional duties as the public relations officer of the students’ union government. There have been several internal and external forces negating me from carrying out my responsibilities. Since the struggle of CBT and POP mode of exams begun, my office has been the centre of attraction and I must make it public because the more I try to keep it low, the more things are getting out of hand’.
‘As the students’ union government spokesman, top among my constitutional duties is to coordinate information from the management/Union to the students. Though I have always tried to sensor some of the messages before circulating to the general students but my detractors have chosen to make the work uneasy for me and thereby compelling me not to serve the students who voted me into office’ he noted.
He also recounted his campaign promises stating that before he came on board as the PRO of the union, that he promised the students timely information, credibility and accountability. According to him, ‘I have always tried to maintain my campaign promises but am being forced to either remain mute or back out of the Aluta struggle but none of the options will work for them as am bent in serving the students and in a more better ways’.
He also appealed to those going about the polytechnic community defaming his name and those using his office to pass wrong information to the students to desist from such devilish act capable of causing commotion in the polytechnic and it’s environment.
He went further to assure the students that he is always there to inform them of any development in the polytechnic because it is a mandate they gave to him.
