May 9th is always a historical day, in memorial of Nine CHS students that lost their lives on a fire incidence, back then in 2001.
Now this is what gave birth to that monument in front of the hostel in college of health, Okofia, Nnewi of the Nmamdi Azikwe university.
It happened according to the story that on May 9, 2001, nine medical students were burnt in a midnight fire, which razed the female hostel.
Fortunately and unfortunately, a student was moved by the cries of the girls, which made him to go and rescue them. On the cost of saving some students from being burnt by the fire, the young and courageous Messiah was trapped down in the fire and he was equally burnt.
His name is CHINEDU CHUKWUNEKE.
This tragedy brought about a heroe called Chinedu Chukwuneke, which the hostel was immortalize in his honor.
This is because he was a young man who layed down his life to save the lives of some students who are alive today. Eighteen years after, the ugly incident is still fresh in the minds of the students and college at large.
The victims includes:
Adaobi Amilo, Amara Ezeliora, Chinenye Nedolisa, Obiageli Muokwugwo, Ugoma Ositanwosu, Doris Ekpo and the courageous Chukwuneke Chinedu, who reportedly died as he made efforts to save the life of others.
Thus may 9 is set aside by the management to pay tributes to them, and also pray for their souls.
